Money that was raised during last year’s Chuck Strasser Memorial Candy Cane 5K helped a Tennessee family adopt their daughter.
“We wouldn’t have been able to adopt without donations from [Tomoka], as well as grants and fundraising,” said Leighanna Bowers, who adopted Ruth Elizabeth Bowers, along with her husband, Jason, earlier this year.
According to Tomoka’s Director of Operations, Barbara Kennedy, the church was able to help the Bowers’ with adoption fees, due to donations that Tomoka’s organization, Bringing Children Home received during the annual 5K. Tomoka was also able to help the Bowers with a scholarship when they adopted their first child, Joshua.
Although parenting a newborn child can be difficult at times, Leighanna says that adopting both of their children has filled the missing piece in their lives. “Adoption was our Plan B, but it was always God’s Plan A for our family.”
